We're excited to share that the Garfield Park Neighbors Association, Big Car Collaborative, and Big Car co-founder and creative director Andy Fry have received a Public Art for Neighborhoods Grant to restore the Welcome to Garfield Park mural, thanks to support from the City of Indianapolis via the Indy Arts Council!
Fry designed and illustrated the mural in 2012 through a collaborative design process with the neighborhood led by Executive Director Jim Walker and the Big Car team. Since then, the mural has become a notable symbol of our Garfield Park neighborhood. Big Car, which has worked in the neighborhood since 2011, raised all of the funds for the original mural and donated the staff time to get it done.
A large group of neighbors both offered input on the themes and content of the mural and helped paint it before the Big Car crew installed the mural on Suding’s Hardware at Shelby Street and Raymond.
Stay tuned for information about volunteer opportunities for neighbors to again join us in painting this beautiful gateway to our community! 🎨
